David Starkey, CBE is historian, broadcaster and Honorary Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

The only child of Quaker parents, he was educated at Kendal Grammar School and Cambridge, where he wrote his ground-breaking dissertation on the court of Henry VIII. Now one of Britain’s leading historians, he writes books, curates historical exhibitions and presents TV documentaries which combine scholarship with wide popular appeal. Winner of the WH Smith Prize for Biography and the Norton Medlicott Medal for Services to History, he is Trustee of the Mary Rose Trust, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Barbers, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Historical Society, and has Honorary Degrees from the Universities of Lancaster and Kent. He was made a CBE in 2007.

An Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society, he is a Church friendly atheist who loves the beauty of the liturgy, music and buildings of the Church of England. He is also an outspoken and controversial panellist on programmes like Question Time. He lives with his long-term partner in London and Kent.
